Monitoring Web server activity

    You can monitor Web errors, how often users access your sites, and other information by looking at the HTTP log files. Information for all sites is stored in one log file.

Turning logging on or off

    To turn Web logging on or off:
    1 Open Mac OS Server Admin and log on to the server you want to administer.
    2 Press the Web Services button and choose Configure Web Server.
    3 To turn Web logging on or off, select or deselect the "Enable Web log" checkbox.
    4 Click Save.

    To turn plug-in logging on or off:
    1 Open Mac OS Server Admin and log on to the server you want to administer.
    2 Press the Web Services button and choose Configure Web Server.
    3 Click the Plug-Ins tab.
    4 To turn plug-in logging on or off, select or deselect the checkbox labeled "Enable plug-in logging."
    5 Click Save.

Viewing a Web server log

    The Web server log is named "HTTP Log" and is located in the HTTP Log folder, inside the AppleShare IP Preferences folder (in the Preferences folder in the System Folder).

    To view the entire Web server log:
    Open the log using a log analysis tool or a text-editing application that can read a large ASCII text file.

    To view the last 32 K (kilobytes) of the Web server log:
    1 Open AppleShare IP Advanced Setup (located in the Web & File Server folder in the AppleShare IP folder on your server.)
    2 Open the Server menu and choose View HTTP Log.

Viewing a plug-in log

    The plug-in log is named "Plug-In Messages." The file name may also be followed by a date. The Plug-In Messages file is located in the HTTP Log folder, inside the AppleShare IP Preferences folder (in the Preferences folder in the System Folder).

    To view a plug-in log:
    Open the log using a log analysis tool or a text-editing application that can read a large ASCII text file.

    For information on interpreting the log, see the "Enable plug-ins" section in Plug-Ins settings.

Viewing loaded plug-ins

    If the Web server is running, you can view a list of the loaded plug-ins.

    To view loaded plug-ins:
    1 Open AppleShare IP Advanced Setup (located in the Web & File Server folder in the AppleShare IP folder on your server.)
    2 Open the Server menu and choose View Loaded Plugins.
